SENATOR DOLE REINTRODUCES LUMBEE RECOGNITION BILL

March 18th, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole late Thursday night introduced the Lumbee Recognition Act, S. 660, which would grant full federal recognition to the Lumbee Indian Tribe.

“Full federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe is the fair and right thing to do,” said Senator Dole. “The Lumbees have been unfairly denied this recognition for more than 100 years, and as a result, the tribe has been denied the education, health care and economic development opportunities that would significantly benefit not just the tribe but also the regional economy.”

The Lumbee Tribe, with 50,000 members, is the largest tribe east of the Mississippi and the largest non-federally recognized tribe in America. North Carolina has recognized the tribe since 1885, but in 1956 it was only partially recognized by the federal government.

“The Lumbees deserve full recognition for their tribe – not a partial nod that ignores the history and the efforts of so many ancestors,” said Senator Dole.

Background
Partial recognition has deprived the Lumbees of critically needed federal assistance and has caused the regional economy to suffer. The Dole legislation will grant the Lumbees eligibility for all federal funds and benefits given to fully recognized tribes. These benefits include federal health care, education, and economic development funding.

Senator Dole has been a leader in pushing this legislation through the Senate. After she introduced the Lumbee Acknowledgement Act in February 2003, her first piece of legislation, Senator Dole successfully secured a hearing before the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs in September 2003, and in October 2003 the Indian Affairs Committee approved the legislation for consideration by the full Senate.
