SENATOR DOLE CALLS FOR 2-1-1 LEGISLATION
Legislation will Streamline Volunteer and Community Services

September 16th, 2003 - Washington, D.C. - Senator Elizabeth Dole announced today that she will be the lead Republican cosponsor for the Calling for 2-1-1 Act of 2003. 2-1-1 is a telephone number that connects callers with important community services and volunteer opportunities. The legislation would expand 2-1-1 services and provide families and individuals in need of a one stop shop for critical needs such as child care, health insurance, and job aid. The legislation will be announced by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), (the Democrat cosponsor), as well as actor George Clooney and officials from the United Way.

“With the abundance of agencies and help lines, folks often don’t know where to turn to get the proper assistance they need,” said Senator Dole. The 2-1-1 line allows families and individuals that are really in need of assistance to find the faith based, community, or government agency to best serve their needs.”

United Way 2-1-1 is also very beneficial in coordinating volunteer efforts. After the attacks on September 11, many individuals sought to volunteer their services but there was not enough coordination to effectively utilize the volunteers. The recent bankruptcy of Pillowtex demonstrated how valuable United Way 2-1-1 services can be to an area that experiences a catastrophic situation. United Way 2-1-1 was promoted very early as the single number to call for access to local services. The telephone service responded to numerous calls for assistance with rent, utilities and other basic needs. As a result, over 2,000 Pillowtex workers have benefited from the program.

“United Way 2-1-1 has done an outstanding job in working to meet the needs of displaced Pillowtex workers,” said Senator Dole. “I have seen first hand why it is so important to coordinate volunteers and various agencies under one umbrella during a crisis situation. I am proud to co-sponsor this legislation and look forward to working with my colleague in the Senate to pass this bill into law.”
