SENATE PASSES IDEA RE-AUTHORIZATION
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jim Bunning today supported the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act which passed the Senate by a vote of 95-3. The House of Representatives and the Senate must now work out the differences in Conference Committee.
“Special education in Kentucky will be served well by the re-authorization of IDEA,” said Bunning. “Funding has been increased to allow children with special needs get the education they deserve, and bureaucratic red tape has been cut so more focus can be placed on the children.”
IDEA is the federal statute that sets the requirements for education of disabled children and provides grants to states to cover some of the extra costs associated with educating children with special needs. The bill is a strong step toward reducing the burdens associated with the existing law. It brings special education in line with No Child Left Behind and puts the focus on student achievement rather than on paperwork and federal mandates. Many changes to the existing law codify current practices that have developed since the last re-authorization.
