Welcome to EducateIndiana!

A headshot of Senator Lugar.I am happy to announce an exciting project with the Indiana Principals Association to spotlight some of the positive things happening in our schools today.

As many of you know, I have a strong interest in education. In fact, my first elected position was that of school board member for Indianapolis Public Schools. During my years as Mayor of Indianapolis, and throughout my time in the Senate, I have worked with many of you to help improve our education system.

In recent years -- particularly since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act -- we all have spent time pointing to the difficulties that some of our schools are facing. This is necessary as we continuously seek to improve achievement. However, I also feel strongly that we must take time to share some of the positive stories. This is where I have asked for assistance from the Indiana Principals Association.

I am hopeful that principals and superintendents from across the state will assist me in spotlighting an academic program, an outstanding teacher, an outstanding student, a building or any and all of the above. Each month we will highlight the activities of a specific Indiana Principals Association District, starting with District 7.

Welcome from Margaret Spellings, U.S. Secretary of Education

Education Secretary Margaret Spellings.Welcome to Senator Lugar’s education web site. This January we celebrated the third anniversary of the day President Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act into law.

The day would have never arrived without the help of Senator Lugar. Thanks to his support and hard work, the Senate and House of Representatives passed No Child Left Behind with large bipartisan majorities.

No Child Left Behind has ushered in a new era in American education. The law says all children can achieve high standards in school. And it says states should measure student progress each year to make sure that they do. For the first time ever, we are holding schools accountable for the success of every student regardless of race, income, or special-need.
