WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced today that eight Michigan fire departments have been awarded $493,660 through the fiscal year 2006 Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). The funding will be used to support operations and firefighter safety. “We owe it to Michigan’s firefighters to provide them with the best equipment and training we can,” said Levin. “These Assistance to Firefighters grants will help protect communities across the state and keep our first responders safe.” “The fire grant program provides a great deal of flexibility for local fire departments and first responders to help meet their training, equipment, and public education needs,” Stabenow said. “This program makes these departments stronger and our local communities safer.” The AFGP awards grants directly to fire departments and EMS organizations to improve the effectiveness of operations and health and safety programs, and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States. Grants are awarded competitively through an application process. Individual grants awards can be found in the table below.
