When was Carl Levin elected to the U.S. Senate?

Carl Levin won an upset victory in 1978 against the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate. The people of Michigan reelected him to the Senate in 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002.

On which Senate committees does Senator Levin serve?

Senator Levin is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee. He also serves as the ranking Democrat on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He is also a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.

Does Senator Levin serve on any task forces?

Senator Levin is the co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, co-chair of the Senate Smart Growth Task Force, and co-chair of the Senate Auto Caucus and the Senate Auto Parts Task Force.

What did Carl Levin do before he was elected to the U.S. Senate?

Carl Levin practiced and taught law in Michigan until 1964 when he was appointed an assistant attorney general of Michigan and the first general counsel for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. He won election to the Detroit City Council in 1969, becoming its president in 1973 by winning the most votes citywide.

Where did Carl Levin grow up?

Carl Levin was born in 1934 in Detroit, where he graduated from Central High School. In 1956, he graduated with honors from Swarthmore College and graduated from Harvard University Law School in 1959.

Carl Levin married Barbara Halpern in 1961. They have three daughters and four grandchildren. His brother Sander has represented Michigan's 12th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1983.
