Senator Tom Harkin - Iowa
Service Academy Nominations
ACADEMY INFORMATION
If you are an Iowa resident and are interested in attending one of the service academies, please write to Senator Harkin's Cedar Rapids office.

It is recommended that you start the process in the spring of your junior year. Senator Harkin's office will start accepting requests for applications after March 1. Once your letter is received, a packet will be mailed to you with all the necessary information. Your letter should be sent to:

SENATOR TOM HARKIN
150 1st AVENUE NE, SUITE 370
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA 52401
(319) 365-4504

Your file will need to be completed by September 30, and will include:

  • Application form
  • SAT or ACT scores: The Senator's ACT code is 7130 and his SAT code is 6287. Only official test score results sent directly from the testing service are accepted.
  • Three letters written either by a teacher, your school principal, church leader, employer, etc.-- people who know you well. At least one of these recommendations must be from someone who knows your academic record.
  • High School (and college, if applicable) grade transcript, including grade point average on a four point scale and class rank.
  • Motivational essay
  • List of Extracurricular activities

You should contact the academies you are interested in as soon as possible. The academy admissions office will furnish the materials they require. Because the competition for a nomination is so difficult, it is recommended that you also open a pre-candidate file with the office of your Representative in the House and with Senator Grassley's office.

After the September 30th deadline, a preliminary screening is done to determine which students will be interviewed by Senator Harkin's Advisory Board. The board will rank the students based on the application packet and an interview. Because Senator Harkin uses the competitive method of nomination, the Senator will submit 10 names to the academy and the school will make the final selection. Generally, Senator Harkin's nominations are submitted by the middle of December.
