Bill would create Canyon Ferry NRA by Martin J. Kidston - Sen. Max Baucus introduced legislation this week that would create a Canyon Ferry National Recreation Area and transfer management of surrounding facilities from the Bureau of Reclamation to the U.S. Forest Service. Baucus announced the legislation in a late-day press release Thursday, saying the bill, if approved, would improve facilities at Canyon Ferry while boosting tourism and enhancing access to public lands. “We are an outdoor state,” he said Thursday. “We hunt, we fish, we take our kids camping, and this new recreation area will be another top-notch place to enjoy Montana’s great outdoors.” As proposed, the Canyon Ferry National Recreation Area would combine the current Canyon Ferry recreation facilities and surrounding public lands, and place them under the Forest Service’s jurisdiction. Currently, he said, the recreation facilities are run by the Bureau of Reclamation. “This is just common sense,” said Baucus. “The Bureau of Reclamation isn’t designated to manage recreation facilities. By putting the Forest Service in charge, Montanans will be getting the best service possible.” Spence Hegstad, manager of the Fish, Wildlife and Park Conservation Trust, said tourism and recreation are important to the state’s economy. The Conservation Trust manages revenue from the sale of cabins surrounding Canyon Ferry Reservoir. “We appreciate Sen. Baucus’ work to help create the Canyon Ferry National Recreation Area,” Hegstad said. “This bill will be a big help to ensure that more people can enjoy the beautiful landscape and all that our state has to offer.” Baucus believes the recreation area would be a tourism draw, helping bring more dollars into the state.
