SENATORS HUTCHISON, CORNYN CALL ON PRESIDENT TO EXPEDITE EL PASO DISASTER DECLARATION

WASHINGTON, DC -- Texas Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn today sent a letter to President Bush urging him to expedite the federal major disaster declaration for El Paso County, Texas as a result of recent flooding.

“A Federal major disaster declaration is critical to ensuring that important mitigation and recovery assistance is made available,” Sen. Hutchison said. “I have been in close contact with community officials and am pleased to hear of the committed support being provided at the local level. The El Paso community needs this disaster declaration as quickly as possible to support their efforts.”

“El Paso and its citizens have been hit hard in recent days and it’s critical that the federal government provide them with the assistance they need to recover from this serious flooding” Sen. Cornyn said. “It’s very important that President Bush expedite Gov. Perry’s request for a disaster declaration and I appreciate his consideration of our request. In the meantime, we will continue working with local, state and federal officials to ensure a strong, unified effort and the Texas congressional delegation stands ready to help in any way possible.”

Sens. Hutchison and Cornyn have been working with the El Paso community to help address issues related to the extensive and damaging floods in El Paso. They have spoken with Representative Silvestre Reyes, Mayor John Cook and other officials to offer assistance at the federal level.
