SENATOR HUTCHISON STATEMENT ON GUANTANAMO BAY, IRAQ TIMETABLE

WASHINGTON, DC -- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Vice Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today issued the following statement on Guantanamo Bay and a so-called “timetable” for pulling U.S. troops from Iraq:

“The facility at Guantanamo Bay is housing terrorists bent on killing Americans and destroying freedom. It should remain in place until it is no longer needed to help win the War on Terror. This facility should never be located on mainland U.S. soil where it could easily be targeted by terrorists and put Americans in harm’s way.

“We should base our policies on our own national security interests, not on the demands of people who do not have America’s best interests in mind. We should never put Americans’ lives at risk simply to appease people who will never accept America or our way of life.

“We must also stay on course in Iraq. To place a timetable for withdrawing our troops would be short-sighted and dangerous. We need to help stabilize Iraq first and then set a timetable for withdrawal – not the other way around.

“To announce a timetable to withdraw now could cause more bloodshed for Americans, Iraqis and our allies fighting the War on Terror.”
