STATEMENT OF SENATOR HUTCHISON ON PRESIDENT'S 2005 BUDGET

WASHINGTON, DC -- Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) issued the following statement today in response to President Bush's proposed budget for fiscal year 2005:

"I commend the president for submitting a budget that provides a roadmap to win the war on terrorism, defend the homeland, promote economic growth and create new jobs. Our top priority must be protecting Americans at home and abroad. This budget clearly reflects that mission while moving to cut the federal deficit in half.

"Our economy has shown clear signs of recovery, but it's still fragile: more jobs must be created. Making tax cuts permanent, especially relief from the marriage penalty will help create jobs by spurring investment. I have already filed legislation in this Congress to finally eliminate the marriage penalty, and I will do everything I can to make certain this unfair tax does not reappear.

"President Bush has outlined a bold vision for NASA. I am pleased the White House is proposing adequate resources to support that vision. For too long, NASA has been neglected. It is time we make science and space exploration a national priority.

"As we consider the 2005 budget, I will have two overall priorities. One is to ensure Congress is serious about restraining the growth of federal spending. The deficit is unacceptably large and threatens our future; it must be addressed. The second is to make certain that Texas is treated fairly and equitably in the federal appropriations process. I will continue to work with the administration to see that our needs are addressed while ensuring our spending levels do not rise beyond our national growth."
