SENATOR HUTCHISON, CONGRESSMAN FROST ANNOUNCE FINAL SETTLEMENT BETWEEN DALLAS AND NAVY ON NAVAL AIR STATION CLEAN-UP

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, along with Congressman Martin Frost, today announced an agreement between the City of Dallas and the U.S. Navy regarding the environmental clean-up of the former Naval Air Station Dallas.

Senator Hutchison, who was instrumental in helping broker this agreement, called the settlement "a win-win for everyone involved. Protracted litigation between the City and the Navy would have been unproductive and costly. Now, we can move forward so that the site can be cleaned and restored for future use by the City of Dallas."

"Senator Hutchison and I are very pleased that the City and Navy have reached a fair agreement for the $53 million needed to clean up the Naval Air Station property," said Congressman Frost. "The city's action clears the way for the restoration of the NAS property to high environmental standards that will help to bring development and economic growth."

The clean up process will begin in 90 days and is scheduled to be completed within 36 months. The work will be conducted by experienced Navy contractors. The groundwater clean-up will be done through a process called natural attenuation. Although this innovative process takes longer to complete, it is considered more environmental friendly and still allows the City to use the land. The federal government has paid funds to the City to settle certain landlord/tenant issues. The City of Dallas has dismissed its suit.
