SENATE OVERWHELMINGLY APPROVES HUTCHISON AMENDMENT
Calling for Vote to Repeal Marriage Tax Penalty by Tax Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- By a vote of 99-1 today, the Senate passed an amendment introduced by Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas calling for the Senate to vote on marriage penalty tax relief legislation prior to April 15, 2000.

Senator Hutchison, who has been a leader in the effort to repeal the penalty married couples pay under the current tax code, called today's vote "a positive signal that marriage penalty tax relief for hard-working American couples is right around the corner -- so long as the President signs our bill."

The Senate will take up the Marriage Tax Relief Act of 2000 next week. This bill, which includes many provisions of S.12, legislation introduced by Senator Hutchison earlier, doubles the standard deduction for married couples to $8,800 and expands the 15 and 28 percent tax brackets for married couples to twice that of a single taxpayer.
