DORGAN REACTS TO KOREA’S AGREEMENT TO RE-OPEN BORDERS TO AMERICAN BEEF

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) Friday welcomed South Korea’s “long overdue” decision to resume imports of U.S. beef.

Before closing its borders to U.S. beef in 2003, South Korea was the third-largest export market for American beef. Dorgan wrote South Korean Ambassador Lee Tae Sik in July to warn him that Members of Congress were growing impatient with his country’s continued ban on American beef.

“Today’s announcement that U.S. beef will be in South Korean stores next month is good news for our ranchers, who have been unfairly penalized for far too long.

“The South Korean government is finally acknowledging what we have always known: America’s beef is safe, healthy, and perfectly fit for their market.”
