(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) leads a Democratic Policy Committee panel discussion Thursday on the methamphetamine epidemic in rural America. Dorgan has worked to combat the spread of meth use in North Dakota and other rural areas. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, he is fighting efforts by the President and House Republicans to slash funding for the Byrne Justice Assistance grant program, the most popular and effective program used to fight the spread of meth. He has also secured $4.2 million to support projects at Minot State University’s Rural Methampethamine center. Dorgan was joined in the discussion at the U.S. Capitol by (l-r) Gene Haislip, a former Deputy Assistant Administrator of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration; Captain Hilton Baker, Commander of the Summit County (OH) Drug Unit; Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA); Tim Smith, Executive Director of Daybreak Youth Services; Peg Shea, Executive Director of the Montana Meth Project; and Senator Max Baucus (D-MT).

(BELCOURT, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) holds a community meeting September 23 with residents of the Turtle Mountain Reservation and surrounding area. Dorgan announced at the meeting that Turtle Mountain Community College will receive a $2 million federal grant for a new construction technology building and to employ new instructors to expand its programs in home construction and nursing. Dorgan also met with Ken Davis, Chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and members of the Tribal Council to discuss improvements they are making and needs for assistance in health care, education and housing.

(INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDEN) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) speaks with area legislators and board members of the International Peace Garden about the need for upgrades to the facility's infrastructure. Dorgan, who included $450,000 in the Interior Appropriations bill pending before Congress for repairs at the garden, toured the area September 23. Dorgan said he'll continue to work to secure the funding and called on the Canadian federal government, as well as North Dakota and Manitoba, to also invest in the park's infrastructure.

(MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) addresses the League of Cities Convention in Minot. Dorgan announced at the convention that the Fiscal Year 2007 Defense Appropriations bill prevents the Air Force from putting any B-52s into storage until a study is completed on the effect such a move would have on the nation's long-range strike capabilities.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) shares a laugh with Gordon Binek, Vice President of Bismarck State College (BSC), at a groundbreaking for the school’s new Mandan Campus. Dorgan, who secured $500,000 in the Senate Appropriations Committee for the development of the program, said it will give a further boost to North Dakota’s diverse and growing energy sector.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) (near center) was among those at a White House bill signing ceremony July 27 for comprehensive sex offender legislation that includes Dru’s Law. Congressman Earl Pomeroy (second from right) and Linda Walker (not pictured), the mother of late University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin, also attended the ceremony. President Bush, pictured above greeting John and Reve Walsh, whose son was abducted 25 years ago, signed into law the legislation Dorgan authored as part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection Act.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) calls on Japan to stop dragging its feet in re-opening its border to U.S. beef. Dorgan – along with (l-r) Senators Ken Salazar (D-CO), Wayne Allard (R-CO), Kent Conrad (D-ND), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and other Senate colleagues – introduced legislation that would impose sanctions on Japan if it does not end its unjustified ban on safe American beef by August 31.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) speaks at a press conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday announcing that his online petition urging the President and Speaker of the House to support disaster relief for family farmers and ranchers was being expanded to a nationwide effort. With more than 1,400 signatures collected just a few days after Dorgan announced the effort in North Dakota, a coalition of farm-state senators including (l-r) Mark Dayton (D-MN) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) joined the effort to persuade the President to abandon his threat to veto an agriculture disaster package that would help producers who have suffered weather-related disasters and skyrocketing energy prices.

(WAHPETON, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) delivers the commencement address at North Dakota State College of Science. Dorgan is a long-time supporter of the college and has helped bring high-tech research and educational programs to the school that have bolstered the local economy and the Red River Valley Research Corridor.

(FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) meets with representatives from the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and VFW at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo. Dorgan discussed health care issues with the groups and toured the facility. Dorgan, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, has worked to expand veterans health care, including to bolster funding for the Veterans Administration so the agency can open new outreach clinics in Dickinson, Williston and Jamestown.

The petition, available at http://dorgan.senate.gov, calls on the President to abandon his threat to veto legislation that would bring relief to producers across the country -- including $175 million to farmers and ranchers in North Dakota -- who lost income last year due to weather-related disasters and skyrocketing energy prices. Dorgan was joined by Congressman Earl Pomeroy (D-ND), left, and North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) calls on the President Wednesday to support an agriculture disaster package for family farmers and ranchers at a press conference at a farmers’ market near the U.S. Capitol. Dorgan included the agriculture disaster package in the emergency supplemental appropriations bill, but the President has said he’ll veto the bill if it includes relief for producers who have suffered from weather-related disasters and high energy prices. Joining Dorgan at the press conference were (l-r) Bill Glasgow, owner of the Union Meat Company; Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), National Farmers Union President Tom Buis (obscured), Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD), and Senator Max Baucus (D-MT).

(MENOKEN, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) speaks at a press conference on efforts to push Congress to approve an agriculture disaster package along with North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson, Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND), and local farmers and businessmen. Dorgan, who introduced the bill with Senator Conrad and a bipartisan group of senators, secured a unanimous vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee to add the ag disaster package to the emergency supplemental bill that will fund the Iraq war and hurricane relief. Dorgan said the legislation would be a significant boost for producers in North Dakota, where torrential rains in the summer of 2005 prevented planting of more than 1 million acres, and drowned another nearly 1 million acres that already had been planted.

(BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA) --- U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) visits students at Jeannette Myhre Elementary School in Bismarck. Dorgan visited classes at the school and spoke with administrators about the progress of federally funded reading programs and the effect of No Child Left Behind.
