Photo representing defenseThe tragic events of September 11 placed our nation in uncharted territory, and we now face new challenges on all fronts. Our civilian authorities must devise ways to utilize their capabilities in the most efficient manner. They must be able to respond to whatever may confront us in the future. This includes training for the unexpected and the unknown and ensuring that the citizens of our nation understand what to do in the midst of an emergency. I am proud to sit on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and work with the Department of Homeland Security to ensure our federal state and local governments are well prepared for all that they might face.

Our military must also rise to new challenges and we must continue to stay united and stand behind them. They give their all to promote and protect democracy at home and abroad. As Senator, and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will fight to provide them with every resource needed to defend our nation and its citizens. This is a new age in America. We must rise to the challenge, and working together, we will become a stronger nation.
