Constituent Services

I am not only the Senator from Maryland, but also the Senator for Maryland. I take great pride in my work on behalf of my constituents. My office can assist Marylanders with casework with the federal government, in obtaining federal grants, nominations to the military academies, Washington tours, internships, and flags flown over the U.S. Capitol.

As a courtesy to my Senate colleagues, if you are not a Maryland resident, I must refer your request to your home state Senator. For your convenience, I have included a list of my Senate colleagues with links to their home pages.

Washington Office

My Washington office focuses mainly on federal legislation. I welcome your comments, opinions and questions on pending federal legislation. You can learn more about the legislative process and my positions on various issues by visiting the Legislative Issues section of my web site.

My Washington office also helps Marylanders with arranging White House and other Washington tours, getting passes to view the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, purchasing a U.S. flag that has flown over the Capitol, and obtaining copies of bills and other federal publications.

State Offices

My state offices take primary responsibility for handling casework. If you need help cutting through government red tape with a federal program such as Social Security, Medicare, or veterans benefits, or are have a problem with a government agency such as the Internal Revenue Service or Immigration and Naturalization Service, my staff can make an inquiry on your behalf. If you are having a problem with a Maryland state agency, such as the Workers Compensation Commission, Department of Human Resources, or the Injured Workers Insurance Fund, your Maryland Delegate or State Senator would be the best person to assist you. You may also want to contact the Governor's Constituent Services office in Baltimore at (410) 947-3006 or (800) 811-8336.

Casework

Caseworkers in my state offices will make every effort to assist you. Whether it's obtaining information from federal agencies related to programs or benefits for which you may be eligible, a problem you're having with a federal government program such as Social Security, Medicare or veterans benefits, or an issue that needs to be resolved with a federal government agency such as the Internal Revenue Service, my staff stands ready to help.

Grants

I understand that the best ideas to help local Maryland communities come from the people. That is why I am happy to offer my assistance to those seeking federal grants to serve their communities.

Academy Nominations

Considering young leaders for nomination to a United States Service Academy is one of my most important responsibilities as a United States Senator. Each year I am encouraged by the number of bright and talented students who contact me requesting my nomination.

Washington Tours

Our Nation's Capital is the home of our most important government institutions, but it is also a major cultural and historical center with great natural and architectural beauty. Whether you are visiting Washington for the first time or are simply on another weekend excursion, you will find that Washington always has something new and fascinating to offer. This section of my web site will help you locate old favorites and suggest a variety of attractions to make your visit special.

Internships

College interns work closely with my staff and are given the opportunity to experience how the U.S. Senate works on a daily basis. An internship can be an exciting experience, and the more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. Internships are voluntary positions, although we are happy to work with interns to help them get college credit.

U.S. Flags and Flag Order Form

My office can assist Marylanders who would like to purchase a U.S. flag which has flown over the Capitol. Flags can be flown in honor of a person or an organization. You may also request a specific date for the flag to be flown with at least one month's notice. A certificate of authenticity will be included with your flag. All flags purchased through Congress are made in the U.S.A.

My office cannot accept flag requests over the Internet or the telephone because we must pay for the flags before they can be flown. A check for the complete amount must accompany your request before we can order your flag. Please note: we can accept flag requests from Maryland residents only. If you are not from Maryland, please contact your home state Senator to request a flag.

Your order must be received at least four weeks in advance. Please allow three weeks for delivery after flying.
