Dodd, Lieberman Announce $1.3 Million for Child Development Initiative in Connecticut

WASHINGTON – A Connecticut Head Start initiative in Stamford will receive $1,397,377 in federal funds to boost education and child development for low-income children, Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced today. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the grants to Childcare Learning Centers, Inc. which administers a Head Start initiative locally.

“Head Start has a proven track record in providing Connecticut children with the necessary skills to begin the life-long journey of education,” Dodd said. “By providing them with the right start we ensure that our youth grow up in a healthy environment with the possibility of unlimited opportunity. We need to continue to invest in America’s future by fully funding Head Start.”

“The Head Start program provides critical education, health and social services that help children succeed later in life,” Lieberman said. “This funding will help ensure that more children benefit from these valuable services during their pivotal early years and are encouraged to reach their full potential, both socially and academically.”

Head Start provides comprehensive and innovative child development strategies that serve children from birth to age five, pregnant women, and their families. Head Start’s child- and family-focused services promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children. Grants support extensive education and early childhood development efforts for children in low-income families, including health, nutrition, parent involvement, and school readiness and literacy initiatives. Head Start is locally administered by community-based non-profit organizations, school systems and other entities. The initiative has helped more than 21 million children nationwide since it began in 1965.
