Photo of an American symbol - the bald eagleI have the honor and privilege to recommend some of Arkansas' most talented and skilled individuals to attend the United States Military Academies.  These academies allow young people to serve our country while receiving a full four-year scholarship from some of our finest institutions of higher learning.  Upon acceptance of an appointment into an Academy, a student commits to five years of active duty service after graduation.

Eligibility

Each applicant for a nomination from my office must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to an academy:

  • Must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday. (25 for the Merchant Marine Academy).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, and a permanent resident of Arkansas.
  • Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

Academy and Nomination Procedures 

Prior to applying for a nomination from my office, please contact your academy or academies of choice to request a pre-candidate questionnaire. Once completed and returned, the academy will apprise you of any special physical, medical, or academic requirements particular to their institution.

The application process for students interested in obtaining a Congressional nomination from me for the class entering in the Summer of 2007 will begin April 1, 2006. The deadline for submission of academy information is December 1, 2006.

Applicants are asked to submit:

  • Application form , provided by my office or available online.
  • An official high school transcript that shows your cumulative grade point average (GPA) and your class ranking.
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least one from your high school counselor or principal.
  • Official results of your ACT or SAT exam.
  • A list of any awards and accomplishments, both extracurricular and academic, that you have received.
  • A recent photo.
  • A personal statement detailing why you are seeking this nomination, and why you want to be commissioned to the academy (one typed page only). If there are inconsistencies in your record or extenuating circumstances which merit special attention, you are encouraged to address them in your essay.

Applications are screened for the following qualities in an individual:

  • scholastic aptitude
  • leadership potential
  • moral character
  • demonstrated athletic ability
  • sincerity of desire to attend academy

The admissions process is extremely competitive. Each Senator is authorized to have a maximum of five cadets in each academy. For each vacancy, a Senator can nominate up to 10 applicants.
