Alaska's Fisheries
Alaska's fisheries and fishing industry are the very heart of Alaska's coastal communities and crucial to the nearly 60,000 Alaskans across the state who directly or indirectly base their livelihoods on it. It is important that the state's fishing industry which employs so many Alaskans and accounts for the bulk of the state's exports be strengthened and encouraged to expand.

Last year, Alaska's Congressional Delegation was successful in having Alaska fishermen qualify for Trade Adjustment Assistance to help alleviate competition from lower quality foreign farmed imports.

Through future initiatives such as required country of origin labeling to increase marketability of Alaska wild fish vs. farmed and increased government purchases of Alaska fish for government food programs such as the Women, Infant and Children program, Alaska's fishing industry can further grow.

We will continue to look for ways to help improve prices for Alaska seafood, encourage the development of new products to add value to catches, promote efforts to find new markets, and work to improve seafood transportation systems.
