State of Maryland

The State of Maryland is rich in history, natural resources and human diversity. Founded by Lord Calvert in 1634 as a religious refuge, it was one of the original 13 colonies. The bravery of Revolutionary War troops earned Maryland the unofficial nickname "The Old Line State," and Francis Scott Key Wrote "The Star Spangled Banner," as he watched the British attack Baltimore's Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. Since several significant Civil War battles, such as Antietam, took place in Maryland, the state's history has had a great impact on our country.

Often called "America in Miniature," Maryland is geographically diverse. The Chesapeake Bay makes that state easy to identify on the US map and is home to a variety of marine life, including the Maryland Blue Crab. The Appalachian Mountains in the west offer skiing and camping. Northern Maryland and the Eastern Shore have beautiful farming communities and small towns. Ocean City has long, open beaches along the Atlantic. The City of Baltimore is famous for its large harbor and ethnic neighborhoods. Annapolis, our state capital, celebrates Maryland's colonial history and is home to the United States Naval Academy.

Maryland residents are just as diverse as the state in which they live. Farmers, fishermen, laborers, businessmen, and professionals all call Maryland home. The combination of metropolitan resources and hometown values makes Maryland wonderful place to visit and to live.
