Lieberman Statement on Rumsfeld Resignation

HARTFORD, CT--Senator Joe Lieberman made the following statement today on the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld:

"I am glad the President is responding to the historic challenge we are facing in Iraq by bringing in someone with a fresh perspective on what we need to achieve our national security objectives and bring our troops home as soon as possible, and I see it as a hopeful development. I have said for some time that our country needs a new Defense Secretary. Our policy in Iraq has been losing public support, and this allows us to open a new discussion with the American people, our military, and our allies to find new approaches to getting the done job in Iraq quickly and in a way that does not compromise American security. I wish Secretary Rumsfeld well and thank him for his service to our nation. Former CIA Chief Robert Gates is a very fine man with solid credentials in national security. But I will withhold final judgement on the matter until we get through the hearings."
