National Preparedness Petition

Dear Mr. President, Secretary Chertoff, Director Paulison, the Army Corps of Engineers and Members of Congress:

The first priority of our government must be the protection of the lives and safety of the American people.

We need a new national commitment to preparedness and home town protection.

America has gone too long without being fully prepared for natural disasters, such as the hurricanes we have only too recently experienced, as well as the ongoing threat of terrorist attack. We have allowed too many vital federal agencies, such as FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers, to lose sight of their primary objectives of public safety and to fall into administrative dysfunction.

Please support Senator Landrieu's efforts to build better, stronger levees and integrated flood protection systems;

Please support major reforms to the Department of Homeland Security that will immediately improve the efficiency and effectiveness of FEMA and other emergency operations and protective systems;

Please support an all-out national program to strengthen large-scale evacuation programs and, after disasters strike, to manage better relief and recovery efforts, with higher standards and competent administrative practices; and

Please support strong and effective new port, waterway, and energy supply security measures vital to the nation's economy, environment and military readiness.

Signed,
