Veterans Deserve Our Gratitude

The Nation will gather this Veterans Day to remember and honor the millions of brave men and women who have served our country to protect us and secure our most precious freedoms. How appropriate that we exercised one of the most precious, electing our leaders, in the same week we honor those who sacrificed their lives for that basic right. Let us pay tribute to our troops currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the globe as they have served our nation with honor and distinction and will become the veterans of tomorrow.

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva to Honor Local Tucson Family as this Year’s Angels in Adoption Recipient

Jesse and Margie Salcido were nominated by Rep. Grijalva on behalf of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) due to their tireless efforts to be an advocate for adoptive and foster children. “My nomination of Jesse and Margie Salcido was based on a desire to provide love and guidance to children”, said Grijalva. “Not only do they have five biological children, but in twenty years, opened their home to eighty-three children and adopted three children. Vietnam Veteran to Finally Receive Medals for Service

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva will present Mr. Ronald Homewytewa, a retired U.S. Navy sailor, his long-waited medals for his service in Vietnam. Mr. Homewytewa, a member of the Tohono O’Odham Nation, served his tour of duty on the USS Providence. After completing his service, Mr. Homewytewa was never honored with the proper medals for his service to our country. “We owe our very freedom and safety to our armed service members, both past and present,” said Grijalva. “I would like thank Mr. Homewytewa on behalf of the American people for his service to our country by presenting these long overdue medals. Rep. Grijalva Comments on Court Filing Against Former FDA Chief Crawford

Today’s court filing underscores the need to overhaul the FDA, the agency in charge of protecting our health and safety. Former FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford knowingly ignored the law regarding his financial holdings and conflicts of interest. It is my hopes that today’s decision will be a warning to future Bush Administration appointees that the public safety of our country will no longer take a backseat to cronyism.

Rep. Grijalva Comments on President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act Visits

For the past five years, the Bush administration has undermined the success of the No Child Left Behind Act by consistently underfunding it and botching its implementation. Today’s talks by President Bush are an insult to the American people, especially our students and teachers. Since the No Child Left Behind law was enacted in 2002, the Bush administration and Republican-controlled Congress have provided $40.4 billion less to schools than they promised to provide when they wrote and passed the law. And a spending bill now pending in the House of Representatives would provide $16.4 billion less than promised for the law in 2007, which would raise No Child Left Behind’s cumulative underfunding to $56.8 billion.
